Beitbridge, Zimbabwe – Bellarmine Chatunga, the youngest son of the late former president Robert Mugabe, has been arrested following an altercation with police officers at a roadblock near the border town of Beitbridge. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 AM, has drawn significant attention due to Chatunga's notorious reputation and past controversies.
According to reports, Chatunga, who was being driven by a Chinese chauffeur, became agitated when police officers at the Bubi checkpoint, located 80 kilometres north of Beitbridge, requested vehicle documents. Witnesses allege that Chatunga began shouting at the officers, accusing them of delaying his journey and questioning whether they knew his identity. The situation escalated when he violently grabbed a Support Unit officer by the collar, tearing off his shirt buttons.
The situation further deteriorated when Chatunga allegedly brandished an Okapi knife, threatening the officers. However, the police managed to subdue him and took him into custody. He was later transported to Beitbridge Rural Police Station.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, stating, "Yes, this person has been arrested. If a person breaks the law of Zimbabwe, they will be arrested, it doesn’t matter who they are."
Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the officer commanding Beitbridge Police District, also confirmed the arrest, though he noted he was not in his office at the time of the incident.
This arrest is the latest in a series of controversies involving Chatunga, who was recently implicated in a money laundering syndicate, allegedly amassing R10 million just before his father's ousting in the 2017 coup. As the youngest son of Robert and Grace Mugabe, Chatunga has often been at the centre of media scrutiny, with this latest incident further tarnishing the family’s already controversial legacy.
